📌 THE GIST:
ELKO COUNTY, NV — State hydrologists confirmed Monday that parts of Elko and Humboldt counties are measuring snowpack at close to zero — levels one expert called “unprecedented” — as the driest start to an Elko spring on record raises alarms for summer water supply and an early wildfire season.
🔍 THE DETAILS:
- The Numbers: Nevada hydrologist Jeff Anderson said Monday that snowpack in parts of Humboldt and Elko counties is at or near zero. Statewide, 70 percent of snow monitoring stations in northern and central Nevada were reporting zero inches of snowpack as of late March, according to National Weather Service Elko.
- Elko Hardest Hit: As of early April, Elko County is the only part of Nevada classified under extreme drought conditions by the U.S. Drought Monitor, concentrated near the Nevada-Idaho border. The Ruby Mountains — the county’s primary natural water reservoir — are at record-low snow water amounts.
- What Caused It: Nevada’s last three months were the warmest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A record-breaking March heat dome pushed temperatures roughly 25 degrees above normal across Elko, accelerating snowmelt before meaningful accumulation could occur.
- The Summer Risk: Nevada State Climatologist Baker Perry said the combination of record heat and near-zero snowpack is “particularly concerning.” National Weather Service Elko warned the conditions raise the risk of an early wildfire season. What little precipitation fell this winter came as rain rather than snow, providing limited long-term water storage.
- One Caveat: Anderson noted that above-normal soil moisture from rain could moderate some impacts, and 2026 has not yet reached the severity of the four-consecutive-drought-year stretch that bottomed out in 2015.
