๐ THE GIST:
ELKO COUNTY, NV โ The Elko County Board of Commissioners voted April 15 to send a letter of support for Nevada Gold Mines’ proposed $500 million ore transport rail line, backing the project’s federal permitting process. The rail line would run 55 miles from the Cortez Mine to the Goldstrike processing facility near Carlin.
๐ THE DETAILS:
- The Project: Nevada Gold Mines is proposing to replace a fleet of over-the-road ore trucks with a 55-mile common carrier rail line connecting its Cortez Mine, south of Crescent Valley, to the Goldstrike facility near Carlin. The project is estimated to cost $500 million.
- The Vote: The commission voted to approve a letter of support for the project’s permitting process following a presentation by NGM representative Matt Miller. The Brief will update when meeting minutes are published.
- The Traffic Impact: If built, the rail line would eliminate up to 80 heavy truck trips daily through Crescent Valley intersections โ a significant reduction in industrial traffic on local roads.
- Where It Stands: The project is in the permitting phase. The commission’s letter supports NGM’s application โ it does not authorize construction. NGM has acknowledged plans could shift depending on engineering and shareholder considerations.
- The Footprint: The rail line would cross approximately eleven road intersections, including roads used by industrial operators in the corridor. Coordination with affected parties is ongoing.

โก THE SPARK: The county’s letter backs a permit application โ not a shovel in the ground. But if the rail line gets built, it would permanently reshape how ore moves across Elko County. Is that the kind of infrastructure decision that should require more than a commission vote?
